Pattern Tester for Jeweled Kaleidoscope Quilt

When Allison of Campbell Soup Diary released the first pictures of her new Jeweled Kaleidoscope pattern and asked for tester I was on fire. I had time, needed a challenge and of course loved the pattern. Lucky me, she chose me as one of her pattern tester and a few days later I was about to start.img_1736

Finding the structure

The coloring page of her ebook gave me a lot of opportunities and I draw a few things. But due to the fact I am an impatient person, I found a way to color it with the computer, so I could change the color of areas in an instant.

And then, while not really looking close to it, there it was. The structure I was looking for. My plan was to create something very new out of the given pattern and additional make it a real kaleidoscope.structure

Have you ever looked through a kaleidoscope? I remember having one when I was a little child. I was looking for these symmetrical colorful shapes within the pattern and I found them.0016b

Admittedly, I didn’t make it easy for myself. I really had to look at my sketch and crosscheck it double to make sure everything fits. Though, I made a mistake by mixing up two triangles. Therefore, the direction of the low volume fabric is wrong in one of the squares. Luckily, one only sees it, when coming close.

With or without applique?

When the top was almost finished I had to add the circle-applique. I am no big fan of circles, I must admit. But comparison of the before and after picture shows, it really won with the circles.img_1726b

I used raw edge applique and ironed my fabric on that “cut and sew foil”, which is normally used for the plotter.sketch-quiltingThen I “only” had to quilt my new top and it was done. This is a good way to improve my free motion quilting skills. I made a few sketches on a photo to see how the lines would fit to the top. And it shows that I will border the structure with a dark hand stitch.

When quilting was done I washed my top before binding to get rid of the quilting marks. And I don’t like the binding shrinking with the rest of the quilt and get some creases. So this is the reason I washed it beforehand.img_1737

About the pattern

And now is the question: How is the new pattern of Allison? It is easy to sew when you have some experience with paper piecing. And it is real fun to see the idea of the coloring page coming to life. Everything fits together and the possibilities are diverse. I am thinking of some new ways to interpret the pattern and maybe there are some other structure I didn’t found.

Also the ebook provides you with the fabric requirements, gives you tips for sewing and assembly and comes in two different sizes. Optional there is the coloring page without circles, so your possibilities are various.

Allison is planning to release her ebook at the 12th of October.img_1733

Thank you really much Allison for putting so much trust in me and make me your pattern tester. It was real fun and I feel honored.
